THE VOICES OF SSALI / Kenya / LAW, PUBLIC LIFE & AFRICAN THOUGHT

Jurist · Pan-African voice · Chair on Editorial Board
Professor Patrick Loch Otieno Lumumba is a Kenyan jurist, author, and Pan-African public intellectual whose career brings together constitutional reform, legal education, and the demands of public service. He has served as Secretary of the Constitution of Kenya Review Commission, Director of the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission, and Director and Chief Executive of the Kenya School of Law. His academic grounding includes law degrees from the University of Nairobi and a doctorate in the Law of the Sea from Ghent University.
His contribution to African public life extends beyond office. Through lectures, books, and the PLO Lumumba Foundation, he has sustained a conversation about integrity, self-determination, and the responsibilities of leadership. His memorial lectures honouring Julius Nyerere, Kwame Nkrumah, and Nelson Mandela place that work within a wider African intellectual tradition. In the Ssali collection, the force of his public voice meets the quieter permanence of the written page: ideas offered for reflection, debate, and the generations that follow.

PEOPLE AROUND THE WORK

MINNEAPOLIS · JULY 2021
During his 2021 United States tour, PLO Lumumba visited George Floyd Square in Minneapolis—a moment of remembrance and solidarity within a wider conversation between Africa and its diaspora.
The tour brought him into dialogue with diaspora communities on Africa’s future, including education, healthcare, infrastructure, and technology. Here, that public conversation gave way to a quieter act: being present.
